Implementation of the activities 2008
During 2008 our research activities were mainly related to a qualitative study of the integration of immigrants on the labour market and into the society in the Czech Republic. During this research phase we focused mainly on the process of integration as perceived by the immigrants themselves. The main research question was formulated as follows: „How are the immigrants integrated on the labour market and in other areas of life in the Czech society?“
The research was carried out as a qualitative multiple-case study and we conducted separate case studies of integration of immigrants of the following origin:
1. EU 15 and several selected highly developed countries (Island, Norway, Australia, Switzerland, the USA, Canada, Japan and New Zealand) 2. New member states of the EU 3. Vietnam 4. Ex-USSR countries (with special stress on the Ukraine; the Baltic states were excluded,) 5. Other third countries: African countries, Asia, Middle East and Latin America (except of ex-USSR and Vietnam)
The project included immigrants who have been living in 3 large cities of the Czech Republic – Prague, Plzen and Brno, and in some cases in their closest surroundings. In each city and for each group of immigrants (‚case‘) we have created a research sample by means of the snowball technique XX In the initial stage we have utilized broader social networks of interviewers and we have also approached immigrants directly in the public space. We were helped by interpreters in our effort to establish contact with immigrants from Vietnam. In the later stage of data collection we decided for purpose-built sampling in order to diversify our research sample.
The data collection was made by series of semi-structured qualitative interviews, which were carried out during the period from April to September 2008. Interviews were led partly by members of the research team (99 interviews) and partly by trained external interviewers. In total, 25 external interviewers participated in the data collection. A great proportion of interviews were conducted in a language, in which the respondent was not a native speaker (most often Czech or English). In some cases the interview was made in the respondent’s mother tongue (e.g. Spanish, French, Russian or English) and some of the interviews were translated by an interpreter (that was a case of most of interviews with Vietnamese and Mongolians). In total, 251 interviews were collected, out of which 75 took place in Plzen, 82 in Prague and 94 in Brno. The number of interviews in each case study varied between 45 and 55. For the purpose of analysis, the data were fully anonymized, so that they did not allow the identification of any of our interviewees. The analysis was made by using Atlas5.ti software.
